Drunk Before Dawn - The Musical
The jungles of Borneo in the 1950s are a wild place in more than one. Headhunting is the normal way to settle inter-tribal disputes, maintain social standing, or win a lady’s hand in marriage. Successful kills are celebrated with wine-soaked festivities lasting for days on end, leaving whole villages of men, women and children drunk. Rituals to invoke and thank the guardian spirits for their help are part and parcel of the celebrations, and pleas for supernatural help are sent via offerings – and drinking – of rice wine.Into one of these villages comes a man named Frank – an unwelcome visitor who talks about unheard-of things like a loving God who wants relationship, not fearful obligation, with the people. Frank’s presence is most adamantly opposed by Dayung, the resident witch-doctor who senses a threat to her power over the villagers. After four seemingly fruitless years in the village, Frank is beginning to doubt his call. Sickness continues to plague the villages, a result of the endless drinking, poor hygiene and lack of nutrition – yet Frank’s attempts to help the villagers to better health are snubbed by Dayung and everyone else, who believe the sickness to be a result of the spirits displeasure. more
